Reality/LuxRender can be a tad delicate. A tiny tweak of a light can ruin the entire scene by making everything way too dark, or engulfing the entire scene in darkness. 
Oh well back to trial and error!
Fun fact: I've had this scene sitting around for weeks, but I was waiting to buy Reality as I thought it's simplicity would be a good place to test it out.
